MetFilm Sales has secured global distribution rights, with the exception of Iceland, for the debut directorial venture “The Home Game” by Smari Gunn and Logi Sigursveinsson. The film, which clinched the audience award at both Nordisk Panorama and the Icelandic Documentary Film Fest Skjaldborg, is gearing up for its North American premiere at DOCNYC this week. The MetFilm team is set to present it to potential buyers at IDFA.
Taking us back a quarter of a century to a tiny fishing village in Iceland with a population of 369, the narrative unfolds as one man, fueled by a dream, constructs a soccer field at the base of a volcano. His aspiration? A home game in the national FA Cup. However, fate deals the team an away fixture, resulting in a crushing 10-0 defeat. The home pitch remains untouched. Fast forward 25 years, and a young boy resurrects his father’s dream—to play a home game and lose by fewer than 10 goals.
Produced by Stephanie Thorpe, Heather Millard, Elfar Adalsteins, and Freyja Kristinsdottir, “The Home Game” is a production of Silfurskjár and The Freezer. The cast features Kari Vidarsson, Vidar Gylfason, Freydis Bjarnadottir, and Gunnar Orn Arnarson.
Mitch Clare, the international sales manager at MetFilm Sales, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Smari and Logi have crafted an irresistible film that will bring warmth and joy to anyone who watches it. It was thrilling to witness this Icelandic gem captivate audiences at Nordisk Panorama and rightfully earn the audience award. We are genuinely excited to present it to the global market.”
Stephanie Thorpe added, “We are excited to join forces with MetFilm on our international journey with ‘The Home Game.’ MetFilm Sales is the ideal partner with their grasp of this heartfelt underdog story and its universal appeal.”
MetFilm Sales’ diverse portfolio also includes the Swedish festival sensation “The Gullspang Miracle” by Maria Fredriksson, Edward Lovelace’s “Name Me Lawand,” and “Riders on the Storm” from Red Bull Studios.
